The Reign Of Terror (8th August - 12th September 1964)
William Hartnell
A long overdue review, but now the latest series is over I have more time to catch up again and including this one I have a total of eight to write!
I came to this adventure with three concerns:
1. It is a six parter
2. It is a History based story
3. It has two episodes missing from the archive
I may have had good reason for each of these concerns but I needn't have worried... The serial starts strongly behind the scenes. It was the first to feature location filming (though William Hartnell was too busy on another story so Brian Proudfoot took his place, not that you'll notice!) It was also the first time the full size TARDIS Police Box was used for a materialisation and the crew were finally out of the restrictive confines of Lime Grove Studios (though it wasn't a permanent move just yet) To top it all, it's the end of the first series and it looks like the Doctor has finally managed to get Ian and Barbara back to Earth in the right time...
I'll start by addressing my concerns (possibly in more detail than necessary!)...
It is a six parter
Traditionally, the longer adventures tend to drag a bit and by today's standards the pace of classic episodes can feel very slow anyway....
